Why we fundraise

Some one asked us why my husband and I needed to do fund raising for our adoption and at that time I couldn't explain it to them. Since then I came across the cook book "A Taste of Heaven", a collection of recipes from adoptive families. The following excerpt from the cook book explains it all.

Perhaps one of the biggest shocks for all of us as we began our adoption journey was the list of items and accompanying fee schedules. For mom's having biological babies, there is no background check with fingerprints required, no home study with several visits from a social worker, no required physical examination, no application and fees for federal government. These are only a few of the requirements to begin an adoption!

While health insurance programs typically cover maternity expenses, few if any cover the many many costs related to an adoption. Some employers offer a percentage of the costs back in the form of an adoption reimbursement, but this is rarely more than a fraction of what has been spent from the time the idea of adoption enters our head to the time that our child is actually home and in our arms.

Domestic adoptions can have fewer expenses than international, especially if the child is older and the state department of human services acts as the agency for the child. Private domestic adoptions can be more costly than some international adoptions however...country fees vary and some countries and agencies offer special fee schedules for sibling groups, older children or those with special needs.

Where health insurance absorbs some of the even "extra" costs of potential health problems of extended NICU costs for a sick or distressed newborn, all of the expenses of an adoption are exclusively on the plate of the adoptive family.

What we have all come to realize is that we can easily afford to "RAISE" our children, it is the process of getting them home which can create the need to earn extra money! As you dear adoption supporter, read this list , know that you have helped to bring a child and family together!

As the blog title says we are crafting our way to adoption. What does that mean you ask. It means we are selling our hand crafted items to help raise the funds to adopt a little girl from Russia. Over the next couple of days and with the help of my best friend Tracye (Hi T!) we will be listing several different items we make.

We know this journey will be long but the reward is well worth the wait. So don't forget to bookmark us so that you can keep us with our journey. Thank you so much for being with us!
